DECENTRALIZATION

Decentralization is the foundational principle of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. It is the characteristic that sets them apart from traditional, centralized financial systems.

In a decentralized system like Bitcoin, no single entity or authority has control over the network. Instead, control is distributed among all participants in the network. With Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, transactions are peer-to-peer, meaning they take place directly between users without an intermediary.

However, decentralization also poses challenges. The lack of a central authority can make it harder to regulate the system and prevent illegal activities. Additionally, the high energy consumption of mining (the process of validating transactions and adding them to the blockchain) is a major concern.
